Smoking cessation support and management with nicotine vaping products (NVPs) in pharmacy

This clinical audit is designed for pharmacists involved in the assessment, management, S3 (Pharmacist only medicine) supply and/or S4 (Prescription only medicine) dispensing and referral of adults undergoing pharmacotherapy-assisted smoking cessation. This clinical audit may be self-recorded as 4.0 hrs of Group 3 CPD (or 12.0 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist's CPD plan upon successful completion of relevant activities. This audit is separated into four parts (outlined below) and is designed to complete at your own pace. The duration of this audit is estimated at 6 hours and includes reflective, educational, auditing and implementation elements.

Audit structure

1. 1.Retrospective audit: Review how well previously seen patients seeking smoking cessation support were assessed and managed, particularly regarding the consideration and utilisation of NVPs.
2. 2.Education component: Education on the legislative, clinical and documentation requirements associated with NVP supply and dispensing, from initial patient assessment to post-supply follow-up.
3. 3.My NVP implementation protocol: Create and implement a new framework that includes the legislative and documentation requirements for NVPs from initial patient assessment to follow-up post supply or dispensing.
4. 4.Prospective audit: Review how well new patients seeking smoking cessation support are assessed and managed, particularly regarding the consideration and utilisation of NVPs.

Learning outcomes

• •Identify and assess adult patients suitable for NVPs as part of smoking cessation based on evidence-based guidance.
• •Evaluate management and/or referral decisions for patients suitable for NVPs, which may include dispensing (with or without prescription).
• •Refine a pharmacy-specific protocol to improve appropriate patient identification, referral and follow-up that meets regulatory and legislative requirements in your location.
